Gary D. Sorrels
We
make house calls.While
growing up and going to school in Williams, MN, Gary was always
fascinated by Nature and its creatures. Study halls found him drawing
instead of doing school work. Weekends, when not working on the family
farm, found him in the woods, hiking, skiing, observing. Two years after
high school, while living and working in Hollywood, Gary enrolled with
Art Instruction Schools, a correspondence school for commercial art.
This led him to a job with Josten's of Owatonna, MN. Gary enjoyed the
work and the friends at Josten's but in early 1970 gave into an intense
desire to succeed as a full time wildlife artist and moved back to
Williams.

That's A Lotta Bull-Moose
By Gary D. Sorrels |
Gary won several
contests held by Art Instruction Schools over the years and although
specializing in big game animals, in 1978 he started entering
federal and state duck stamp contests. Placing consistently high in
them encouraged him to try full size paintings of waterfowl and
Upland Game birds. In July of 1986 he won the Minnesota Ducks
Unlimited sponsor print contest, which earned him their "Artist
of the Year" title or 1987.
Considered by many to be one of the finest Whitetail Deer, Winter
and Popple tree painters today, Gary still doggedly strives for
improvement by personal contact with Nature plus long and arduous
reference trips. |

three children live in a new home and studio designed by him. Their
neighbors, consisting mostly of deer, Moose, Wolf, Bear and Upland
Game Birds, provide him with a never ending source of valuable
reference material.
